Container Deposit Scheme

Getting involved with Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic)

Everyone can now get a 10-cent refund as part of Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) for every eligible can, carton, and bottle returned. It’s a simple way to earn extra cash, recycle more, reduce litter, and support a cleaner environment.

What containers are accepted

Acceptable drink containers, includes:

  • Plastic water bottles and soft drink bottles
  • Glass beer bottles
  • Cans for soft drinks and alcohol
  • Small fruit juice cartons

Most aluminium, glass, plastic and liquid paperboard (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres are eligible.
You can keep the lids on.  These will be recycled too.

What is not accepted

There are some drink containers that are not eligible for a refund.

Generally, these containers are less than 150mL and more than 3 litres. Many of these containers can still be recycled in your yellow lid kerbside bins.

  • Wine and spirit bottles
  • Milk containers
  • Paperboard cartons (over 1 litre)
  • Cordial bottles

For more information visit the CDS Vic website to read more about eligible containers.

How can I get involved with the CDS?

There are many ways you can get involved with the CDS:

What can I do if a container is rejected?

Sometimes an eligible container may be rejected at a refund point, including some imported containers. If this happens, don’t worry — there are a couple of easy ways to get help.

  1. Visit a staffed refund point
Go to a depot or an over the counter refund point. These locations have staff who can check your container and help process your refund if it meets the eligibility criteria.
  2. Contact CDS Vic who can help
If you can’t get to a staffed refund point, you can email enquiries@cdsvic.org.au with the details of the container.
    Please include:
    - a clear photo of the front of the container
    - a clear photo of the back of the container

CDS Vic can review the container and, if it is eligible, contact the supplier to try to get it registered.

Remember: Containers that are not eligible for a refund can still be recycled in your yellow lid kerbside bin.
