E-waste is anything with a plug, cord or battery. Many people think only computers, TVs and mobile phones are e-waste, but it also includes everyday items such as electric toothbrushes, toys, watches, headphones, remote controls and small household appliances.
Many of these items contain hidden or embedded batteries that cannot be easily removed. A simple rule to remember is: if it lights up, moves, makes noise or needs charging, it's e-waste.
When e-waste is placed in household bins, it creates a safety risk for people and property. Batteries can be crushed during collection and processing, increasing the risk of fires. E-waste can also harm the environment by releasing toxic chemicals into the soil, water and air when disposed of incorrectly.
At the same time, e-waste contains valuable materials such as metals, plastics and other resources that can be recovered and used to make new products.
Keep e-waste out of your household bins. Instead, take it to an e-waste drop-off location or recycling centre.
